We attribute numerous societal changes to the pandemic, including how we work, communicate and educate our children.
The shift from in-person to online teaching made many parents aware of classroom activities and the emphasis on academic achievement at the expense of other aspects of personal development, health and well-being.
The previously accepted method of a child sitting quietly in a classroom under adult supervision for most of the day, five days a week, no longer appeared to be the sole way to receive a good quality education.
For the past 150 years, the industrial type education system has remained largely unchanged in how it is delivered and the subjects taught in isolation, ultimately leading to exams that are becoming less relevant to potential employers as supported by many world leading organisations.
There is a growing recognition that the uniform approach in mainstream schools, where children are grouped by age rather than ability, along with an extensive and often outdated curriculum, frequent testing, target setting, homework, large class sizes and insufficient staffing is impacting the health and well-being of many children.
The number of children for whom traditional schooling does not fit, due to factors like neurodiversity, special educational needs and disabilities continues to grow. This is mainly due to the political unwillingness to reform the existing system and the persistent financial difficulties, especially in hiring and retaining teachers in the state system.
Consequently, numerous parents are exploring alternative educational methods that emphasise flexibility and a holistic approach, focusing less on conformity. This aims to support their children's development as unique individuals, preparing them to navigate a more complex and less human-centered world.
Home education is a way of achieving this goal, supported with a plethora of resources including online schools, private tutors, Ed tech, local in-person groups and activities.
At Mont21, where we have been educating children for 30 years using the holistic Montessori method, every child, regardless of ability or need, is encouraged to achieve their full potential. We offer home learners a pathway that utilises a world leading digital platform supported by highly qualified teachers that is accessible anytime and anywhere to fit each child and family lifestyle.
